Story Behind The Song
My wife died from cancer a year earlier and I was at a Relay For Life and from the back I saw this 3 year old girl holding the hand of her mother who obviously had the disease. The mother was wearing a Survivor tee shirt. Very emotional.

Lyrics
Survivor (A SINGLE WORD)
She wore a blue bandana and baggy tattered jeans.
Anyone can see she used to fill them better but, now, well no.
Her sandals barely left the ground
as she stepped along.
Her skin was pale as the moon on this hot summer night,
her expression was that of determination, way past anger.
Her outstretched arm, was reaching out, reaching down,
to the hand of her 3-year old daughter.
Yeah she's walking, for her daughter, for the future,
to avoid her past happening again.
On her back, a single word emblazoned,
on her tee-shirt, Survivor is all it said. Survivor
No more, what happened, it happened.
No more why, just is, that's all.
Months ago they were living the dream
but then the test results came crashing in. Crashing in.
First denial, then anger, then fear, now action.
Mental strength drawn from physical weakness.
Trying to keep things as they were before
is more than a full time job.
And she's walking, for her daughter, for the future,
to avoid her past happening again.
On her back, a single word emblazoned,
on her tee-shirt, Survivor is all it said.
I try not to be sad, I try to be inspired,
but forgive me, I just can't help it.
Watching my wife and daughter walk.
Watching my wife and baby walk.
And she's walking, for her daughter, for the future,
to avoid her past happening again.
On her back, a single word emblazoned,
on her tee-shirt, Survivor.
